Student Highlight: Ariel Briggs
"The State Trade and Export Promotion (STEP) internship provides an opportunity to work with a medium-size (approximately $800K) federal grant. This is an excellent opportunity to learn policies and procedures regarding federal funds. I am learning about state and federal accountability that is applicable to government and nonprofits sectors. I participate in grant writing, metrics, and reporting. Some of the most difficult aspects of the grant have been learning to balance federal expectations with available resources. Since the grant’s purpose is to increase international exports, I have the opportunity to network and learn from Utah businesses that are promoting their products internationally. Prof. Boam’s International Management is a great aid to my internship; I draw on principles from the class on a regular basis. Whether, it is to create strategic export plans, which is required for businesses that receive assistance from STEP, or planning the next grant cycle. Nonprofit courses have been beneficial, because there is a high similarity between this grant and what nonprofits experience. Not to mention, two of our partners are nonprofit organizations, understanding their constraints helps the strength of the partnership."
