Student Highlight: Austin Becker

Capitol Building

"Before I began my coursework in the University of Utah’s MIAGE program I had a faint understanding of the issues that U.S. businesses face in foreign markets. My coursework in the MIAGE program quickly introduced me to the actual mechanics of these issues.

My classes cover broad topics, such as choosing between a distributor or joint venture, to nuances, like repatriating profits earned abroad. Once I started my internship at the Utah Governor’s Office of Economic Development, International Trade and Diplomacy Office I have seen the principles and issues that we learn about and discuss in class come to life.

My office regularly helps small Utah companies address concerns over choosing the right distributor or how to make foreign sales more profitable. Thanks to the MIAGE program, I understand where these businesses are coming from and what sort of options are on the table."
